Mountain House Reconstruction – Rudartsi, Bulgaria

This project transforms an existing house from the 1980s into a contemporary mountain home, while preserving the familiar scale and character of the original building. Located in the village of Rudartsi, the reconstruction responds closely to the surrounding landscape, the existing structure and the natural qualities of the site.

The architectural concept is based on a restrained palette of local stone, natural timber and light mineral render. The stone visually anchors the house to the terrain, while the timber cladding brings warmth and creates a natural connection with the wooded mountain setting. The original pitched-roof silhouette is retained and refined, allowing the building to remain recognisable
without appearing dated.

New openings and carefully positioned glazed areas improve the relationship between the interior, the garden and the surrounding views. Contemporary details are introduced with restraint, creating a balanced dialogue between the existing architecture and its new identity.

Rather than replacing the old house, the project gives it a second life—more functional, energyefficient and connected to its environment, while preserving the sense of permanence and simplicity appropriate to its location.
